As I prepare to make a full-time assault on the pari-mutuel beast, I am reminded once again of the obstacles facing a professional horseplayer. If it was just a matter of accumulating a positive ROI, I would’ve been making a comfortable living a long time ago, but a successful gambling career consists of more than just a solid return on investment. The importance of one’s own psychological makeup simply cannot be overstated! Personally, I like to win and I’m very ill at ease with low-percentage overlays—regardless of my edge.

One of the greatest struggles that value bettors face is gaining access to the current odds.

After all, it’s not the typical job that allows one to tune in to the simulcast during working hours and, given that the whole premise of value betting is finding overlays, one can readily appreciate the dilemma that this presents.

Of course, there’s always the internet but, once again, monitoring the tote board at Philadelphia Park in the middle of the triple bypass surgery you’re expected to perform may not be a prudent career move!
