I was reminded once again why I watch the major race telecasts for entertainment purposes only. Yesterday, before the running of the Kentucky Oaks, ESPN analyst Randy Moss noted that jockey Victor Espinoza felt that his mount, Balance—the 8/5 race favorite—had put in one of the best works he’d ever been in the saddle for when she drilled six furlongs in 1:11-3/5 on April 28 at Hollywood Park.

Thus, Mr. Moss felt compelled to swallow the chalk and concede victory to the three-year-old daughter of Thunder Gulch. Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell Balance what great form she was in, and the “great” filly promptly got drubbed for the second race in a row.
